Remake: Would you watch this?

I haven’t posted for over a year and now I’m posting two in a day!

Well, I heard that a Murder, She Wrote remake was being made and then I heard that it was cancelled.

Apparently Angela Lansbury did not like the planned remake and was relieved to hear that it was cancelled.

But I would love to see a remake of some sort!

That got me thinking.

So here’s my idea of a remake.

1. The show will be called Murder, She Wrote.

2. The main character is a mystery writer. She is younger than Jessica. She lives in Jessica’s old house in Cabot Cove!

3. She can be a distant relative of Jessica or someone who has never met Jessica and the only things in common are that they are both mystery writers and the house they lived/live in!

4. The main character is less worldly than Jessica (younger, more naïve) and doesn’t know a lot of people but gets to travel and runs into, of course, murders but also all sorts of trouble due to her naïve nature. She will try lots of things for the first time.

5. One of the recurring characters from Cabot Cove will be played by an actor who played a popular character in the 70s or 80s TV like Scott Baio or Henry Winkler or John Stamos or someone like that, preferably from a family show.

6. Just like the original show, there will be episodes set in Cabot Cove and those set in other places where the main character is visiting.

「ジェシカおばさん事件簿」のリメイクが企画されていたけれど、結局キャンセルされたと聞きました。アンジェラ・ランズベリーはこの企画にあまりいい顔をしておらず、キャンセルになって安心しているとのこと。

でも、私、なんらかのリメイク見たいな～～～！

そこで、考えてみたのです。

私がリメイクを作るとしたら・・・

１．タイトルは英語ではそのまま「Murder, She Wrote」。でも日本語タイトルは変えないといけません。主人公はジェシカではないから。

２．主人公はジェシカよりは若いミステリー作家。そしてなんとキャボット・コーブのあの家に住んでいるのです！

３．ジェシカの遠い親戚でもいいし、ジェシカとは一度も会ったことがなく、共通点といえば、ミステリー作家であることと、住んでいる家だけ。。。というシチュエーションでもいいですね。

４．主人公はジェシカよりは、世慣れしていない若くてナイーブな作家。ジェシカのように友人が多いわけでないけれでも、旅行する機会が多く、行く先々で「殺人」だけでなく、そのナイーブな性質からいろんなトラブルにまきこまれます。「初めての経験」も多し。

５．レギュラーのキャラの一人には７０年代または８０年代のテレビの人気キャラを演じた役者をあてる。スコット・ベイオとか、ヘンリー・ウィンクラーとか、ジョン・ステイモスとか。できればファミリードラマ出身がいいですね。

６．オリジナルのようにキャボット・コーブを舞台にしたエピソードとその他主人公が訪れている街を舞台にしたエピソードからなる。

Ep. 5.3 Mr. Penroy’s Vacation

Oh my god! I can’t believe I have not posted over a year after writing just one episode!! So embarrassing!

But I’m going to pick it up now! I promise!

Today I’m going to write about one of my favourite episodes.

I think this is one of the more popular episodes in general too.

Season 5 is when we meet Sheriff Metzger. We hear from Jessica and Seth that Amos Tupper has retired and moved back to Kentucky. The new sheriff is from New York and thinks that his new career in Cabot Cove will be like a paid vacation. Little did he know!!

We also hear about his wife Adelle straight away. We learn that she is a chatterbox and a very social person but I think throughout the rest of the series we only hear about her but never actually see her.

The reason I like this episode so much is, of course, because it is set in Cabot Cove. But also it has a sort of light and comical tone.

Mr. Penroy is a retired bachelor, boarding at the house of the Appletree spinster sisters, Helen and Lilian. He’s been living in Cabot Cove for a while now but we learn that he is not a real local and seems to have a secret past.

The Appletree sisters are what make this episode light and comical. They are always friendly and cheerful and proper, always ready to invite you in and serve you cider (which obviously is undrinkable). 

When these seemly innocent old ladies find Mr. Penroy dead on the floor, what do they do? They decide to bury his body in their garden!!!  AND they go ahead and have a birthday party for Mr. Penroy telling everyone that he had to go away urgently.

The secret past of Mr. Penroy makes things complicated for the new sheriff and he has to ask Jessica for help, starting their cooperative relationship as was formed with his predecessor Sheriff Tupper.

As with all Cabot Cove episodes, I love seeing the interiors of Jessica’s house and the Appletree sisters’ house or any other houses in Cabot Cove. I look at their wall papers, rugs, furniture, paintings, tea cups, etc., etc., etc!

I have a 6-year-old daughter and we watched this episode together. It was her first Murder, She Wrote viewing. I know she’s a bit too young for “murders”. But I thought this was an OK episode to start with. So I let her watch it with me.  Although she gets too anxious and scared watching even Disney films in the exciting and suspenseful bits, she was perfectly fine with this episode and I think she liked it.

Well, but I certainly do not recommend this to very young children. Please use your discretion. But I personally think some of the Murder, She Wrote episodes are more OK than lots of stuff intended for children. I certainly want my daughter to grow up to be an intelligent, decent, fair-minded, and caring woman like JB Fletcher!

For the rest of grown up who-dun-it fans, I definitely recommend this episode!

なんてことでしょう！最初のエピソードを書いてから、なんと一年以上も投稿してないとは！！はずかしー！！！

でも、がんばって続けまーす！！

今日は私の大好きなエピソードからひとつ。

このエピソードは一般的にも人気の高いエピソードのひとつだと思います。

このシーズン５から新しいキャラ、シェリフ・メッツガーが加わります。ジェシカとセスの話から、前のシェリフ、エイモス・タッパーは退職しケンタッキーへ帰ったことが知らされます。ニューヨークの警察で働いていた新シェリフにとって、この静かで小さな町での仕事は有給休暇みたいなもんだ！なんて話していますが、とんでもないですよね！

それから、新しいシェリフの奥さん、アデルの話も出てきます。どうやら、アデルはおしゃべり好きで社交的な性格。今後シリーズ終了まで、このアデルの話はよく出てくるものの、実際に人物が登場することはないようです。

私がこのエピソードが好きなのは、もちろんキャボット・コーブのエピソードであるというのもありますが、ちょっと軽いタッチでコミカルでもあるからなんですね。

ペンロイ氏は定年退職した独身のおじいちゃんで、とっくの昔に婚期を過ぎたアップルツリー姉妹（ヘレンとリリアン）の住む家に間借りしています。彼はキャボット・コーブにしばらく住んでいますが、元々はよそ者で、しかも、なにか過去に秘密を持っている様子。

このアップルツリー姉妹がとぼけた二人で、このエピソードをコミカルにしている要素のひとつです。いつもフレンドリーで、きちんとしていて、陽気で、家を訪れたお客さんには自家製（？）サイダーをふるまってくれるシンプルで世間知らずな二人なんですが、ペンロイ氏が死んでるのを発見して、何をしたと思います？？？なんと、庭に死体を埋めたのです！しかも、その翌日本人欠席で予定通りペンロイ氏のバースデーパーティを決行！

どんどん状況が複雑になっていき、シェリフ・メッツガーを困らせていくわけですが、前シェリフのアドバイス通り困った時はジェシカに頼ります。こうして、エイモス＆ジェシカの伝統通り、二人の協力体制が築かれていきます。

他のキャボット・コーブのエピソードと同じく、このエピソードでもジェシカの自宅・アップルツリー姉妹の家のインテリアを見るのが楽しみのひとつですね。壁紙、家具、絵画、ティーカップ、等等！！

私には６歳の娘がいるのですが、最近このエピソードを一緒に見ました。初めての「ジェシカおばさんの事件簿」です。一応「殺人」をテーマにしている番組ですので、まだ６歳の娘には早いのは承知しています。でもこのエピソードならＯＫかなって思ったんですよね。ディズニーの映画を見ても、エキサイティングだったりドキドキハラハラする場面では不安になってしまう娘ですが、これは大丈夫でした。かなり気に入ったようですよ。

まあ、でも、私はこれを小さいお子さんに薦めているわけでは絶対ありません。よーく考慮して判断してください♪

個人的には子供むけとされている映画や番組の多くのものよりましなジェシカおばさんエピソードはいっぱいあると思うんですよねー。

娘にはジェシカみたいに、聡明で、フェアで、非常にまともな優しい女性になってもらいたいものです。

でも、その他の大人のファンの皆さんには是非見てもらいたいエピソードですよ！

Ep 1.1 The Murder of Sherlock Holmes

I wrote in my first post that the episodes will be random but I might as well start with this very first episode.

In this episode, we meet Jessica before she becomes famous. She is a high school English teacher in an imaginary small fishing town Cabot Cove, Maine, who has been widowed not too long ago. 

We also meet her nephew (her husband Frank's nephew), Grady. 

Grady is a somewhat comical recurring character. He lost his parents at sometime growing up and lived with his uncle Frank and his wife Jessica in Cabot Cove. 

He is often mistakenly arrested or suspected of a murder in the series and it started with this episode!
But we love Grady, don't we? Jessica certainly does.

By the way, Jessica has so many nephews and nieces and they all get mixed up in murders!!!

Anyway back to the story. Jessica has finished a mystery novel that she had been writing in her spare time and shows it to Grady. He loves the novel and sends it to a publisher without telling Jessica. 

Of course, everyone loves the novel and the mystery writer JB Fletcher is born.
And as you keep watching, of course she will be involved in ..... what you know! Murder!

I had seen other episodes of Murder, she wrote before I saw this one. So I thought it a bit funny watching pre-published Jessica. Her giggling away with other ladies from the town.
I guess it is common to see Jessica in the company of men rather than a group of women in later episodes. You notice how tall she is when in the company of ladies.
She soooo doesn't look right, hehe.

This is not one of my favourite episodes.
Probably because there is not enough of Cabot Cove. In my opinion, Cabot Cove episodes are the best.
Also, there is a bit of romance.
I'm not a fan of episodes where there is a hint of romance or flirtation but the romance is very strong in this episode. I don't think JB and romance mix very well. Sorry!
Not that I don't believe a woman in her 60s should have a romance. I've just never seen any episodes that were convincing.

最初の記事でエピソードの順番はランダムと書いたばっかりなんですが、まずは第一回目、パイロットエピソードから書きたいと思います。
このエピソードでは、有名になる前のジェシカがいるわけですね。米国東海岸ニューイングランド地方のメイン州にあるという設定の架空の小さな漁業町キャボット・コーブに住む高校の英語教師（ここでの英語教師は日本でいう国語ってことです）のジェシカ。ご主人（フランク）を亡くしてから数年ってところでしょうか。

このエピで、また、後のエピソードで何度も会うことになる彼女の甥（亡夫フランクの甥）グレーディも出てきます。
このグレーディはちょっとコミカルなキャラ。子供の頃（ティーンの頃？）両親を亡くし、叔父であるフランクとその妻ジェシカの元キャボット・コーブで育ちます。
彼は今後このシリーズで何度も殺人犯人に間違われ逮捕されることになるんですが、それはこの第１回からはじまったのです！！！
大人になってもおばさんに助けてもらってばっかりいるダメダメなグレーディですが、憎めないキャラなのです。
ちなみに、ジェシカには他にも甥やら姪がやたらとたくさんいて、しかもみんな殺人事件に巻き込まれちゃうんですね。。。！

ま、それはおいておいて、ストーリーですが、そんな高校教師のジェシカが密かに書いていた推理小説をグレーディに見せたわけですが、そのグレーディがおばさんに内緒で出版社に見せたところ、大好評。話がトントン進み、ミステリー作家ＪＢフレッチャーが誕生したわけです。
で、もちろん、殺人事件に巻き込まれてしまいます。

このエピソードを見る前に、他のエピソードを見ていたため、なんか、作家デビューする前のジェシカが、近所のおばちゃんたちとくすくす笑いあったりしてるシーンは、あまりにも不自然で笑ってしまいます。
普段のエピソードでは男性とならんでることが多いんでしょうかね。彼女の背の高さが際立ってるしで、なんかめっちゃ浮いてるんですね～～・笑。

さて、このエピソードはあまり好きなエピソードではありません。たぶん、キャボット・コーブがあまり出てこないからでしょう。やっぱりなんていったってキャボット・コーブのエピソードが好きなんですねぇ。
あと、ジェシカのロマンスが出てくるってのも原因かもしれません。
別に６０歳代のおばさんのロマンスがだめだって言ってるわけではないんですよ。
ただ、今まで見た、ジェシカのロマンスのエピソードは、いまいち説得力にかけるなぁって思うだけです。

Hi. I'm originally from Japan but haven't lived in Japan for many years now. I live in New Zealand.
And I'm a big fan of Jessica Fletcher.
Yep. That woman in the 80s sleuth drama Murder, She Wrote.
To be precise, I'm a fan of Jessica Fletcher the character rather than the show.
I lived in America for a few years when I was a teenager but that was just before the show started.
So I didn't watch the show real time but caught a few episodes when it aired in Japan later and loved it.
I mainly watch the episodes on DVDs that I own but I can sometimes catch a few episodes somewhere else.

Anyway, a thought occurred to me today to keep a blog on the episodes I watch in both Japanese and English so here it goes.

The episodes will be random and posting will be random too.
I will not reveal who done it and will try not to tell you too much so it won't spoil the fun for those of you who are planning to watch the episodes later.

現在ニュージーランド在住。もう日本には何年も住んでいません。
そして、ジェシカ・フレッチャーの大ファンなのであります。
ジェシカとは、あの８０年代に日本でもちょっと放映されていた「ジェシカおばさんの事件簿」の主役です。
番組のファンというよりは、このジェシカおばさんのキャラクターのファンなのです。
私はもう何年も前にティーンの頃、アメリカにも数年住んでいたのですが、それはこの番組が始まるほんの少し前。いれちがいでした。
なので、リアルタイムで観てはいないのですが、その後、日本での放映をちょこっと観て、まず気に入ったのです。
今は手持ちのＤＶＤで観たり、その他でちょこっと観たりしています。

今日、突然、ブログを日本語と英語で書いてみよう！と思いつき、ここにいたったわけです。さて、どうなるでしょうかね。

ブログに書くエピソードの順番はランダム。更新もランダム。
ブログの中で犯人をあかすことはしません。そして、ストーリーもあまりばらさないよう努めます。
